A New Bill of Rights- A Good or Bad Idea?

The Human Rights Act was passed in 1998 and builds the European Convention of Human Rights into British law.

The rights set out in the Articles of the ECHR include:
  • the right to life
  • prohibition of torture
  • the right to a fair trial
  • the right to respect for private and family life
  • freedom of thought, conscience and religion;
  • freedom of expression
  • freedom of assembly and association
  • the right to marry
  • Prohibition of discrimination.
Until the Human Rights Act was implemented in 2000, any British citizen who felt that their rights had been infringed had to take their case to the European court of Human Rights in Strasbourg - a complex and time-consuming process. So the Human Rights Act incorporated the European Convention, in its entirety - and therefore with no reservations - into UK law.
